Studying medicine in Romania, one of Europe’s oldest countries, offers students excellent quality of education, a rich cultural heritage, affordable tuition and living expenses, and worldwide degree recognition. Six-year general medicine programs consist of three years of preclinical studies, followed by three years of clinical studies.

The Romanian education system has undergone constant changes and renovations. Today, more than 40 public colleges and universities operate in Romania. There are two medical schools in Romania that currently offer English programs for medical studies: The University of Medicine & Pharmacy Iași & The University of Cluj Napoca.

Studying medicine in Romania is an attractive choice for many international students due to the reasonable tuition fees and living expenses in Europe.

How much does it cost to study medicine in Romania?

Living expenses are budget friendly – university students can live comfortably for 500 to 700 Euros per month. This includes basic accommodations, food, entertainment, health insurance and transportation.

Undergraduate admission requirements for medical school

Applicants must be 18 years old before the next academic year (October) with a valid high school diploma. Entrance exams are not required but universities tend to prefer students who have successfully completed coursework in biology, chemistry and physics. Applications may be submitted directly to the Romanian Ministry of Education six to eight months prior to the following academic year. Third party resources are also available to assist applicants with the process by working directly with the Ministry of Education.

Application dates

The application deadline established by the Romanian Ministry of Education is July 31 – with the possibility of an extension to August 30. Still, even if deadlines are extended, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Tuition fees

Tuition for English medical school programs in Romania is approximately 7,000 Euros per year (about $9000 USD) – a quarter of the tuition charged by state universities in the U.S.!
