USMLE Basics: What You Need to Know

USMLEIf you are thinking of practicing medicine in the US, then you need to take what is called the USMLE, or United States Medical Licensure Exam. It is an exam that is conducted by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). This exam is a multiple choice one that aims to test a person’s medical knowledge. This will also test their knowledge of practical and ethical applications of medicine.

The examination comes in three parts.

• Step 1, which focuses on knowledge regarding the basic principles of medicine.

• Step 2, which is called the Step 2 CK, tries to determine if the examinee has ample knowledge for patient care.

• Step 3 is centered on patient management. It checks to see if an examinee can properly evaluate a patient’s medical history, among other things.

What to Expect When You Take These Exams

Step 1 of the USMLE exams cover the first 2 years of the MBBS syllabus, which consists of subjects such as anatomy, pathology, pediatrics, pharmacology, and surgery to name a few. Also included in the exams are subjects taken in the 3 year of MBBS, which include behavioral sciences, epidemiology, and biostatistics.

Step 2 is usually taken during a medical student’s 4th year and covers subjects such as cardiology, pulmonology, and pediatrics, to name a few. Step 3 takes 2 days to complete and consists of simulations that test a student’s ability to diagnose and understand a patient’s medical history.
