USMLE Basics: What You Need to Know


If you are thinking of practicing medicine in the US, then you need to take what is called the USMLE, or United States Medical Licensure Exam. It is an exam that is conducted by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). What to Expect When You Take These Exams

Step 1 of the USMLE exams cover the first 2 years of the MBBS syllabus, which consists of subjects such as anatomy, pathology, pediatrics, pharmacology, and surgery to name a few. Also included in the exams are subjects taken in the 3 year of MBBS, which include behavioral sciences, epidemiology, and biostatistics.

Step 2 is usually taken during a medical student’s 4th year and covers subjects such as cardiology, pulmonology, and pediatrics, to name a few. Step 3 takes 2 days to complete and consists of simulations that test a student’s ability to diagnose and understand a patient’s medical history.
